I'm going to show you that you can make your own simple homemade flour tortillas. No experience needed. These are one of the easiest foods from scratch to make. They're delicious, fresh, and have just a handful of ingredients in them.

Jump to:
They taste similar to some of the store bought tortillas but much fresher. Have you ever looked at the ingredients list on regular store-bought flour tortillas? It's pretty long for such a simple food. Tortillas from the store are shelf stable for a scary amount of time. When you get used to making fresh homemade food, you will realize that it doesn't keep long on the counter. That's a good thing.

If you make these and decide that you really like them, you might want to invest in a griddle and a tortila press. While they are super simple to make, they can take quite a while between flattening them, rolling them out, and baking them one by one. I use a griddle, and it goes by pretty quick. I can make four at once.

Equipment
- Large Skillet or griddle
- Burget Press
- Pastry Roller
- Kitchen Towel
- Mixing Bowl
- Spatula
- Measuring Cups
- Measuring Spoons
Ingredients
- 3 Cups organic all purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ⅓ cup extra virgin olive oil + 1 extra tablespoon for later
- 1 cup water, warm
Instructions
- Grab a bowl and your ingredients. Mix your flour, baking powder, and salt.
- Create a well in the middle (Make a hole that goes to the bottom of the bowl in the center)
- In that well, pour in your warm water and ⅓ Cup of the olive oil.
- Mix well. It will be a very shaggy dough (As Pictured)
- Once it is fully combined, add in your last tablespoon of olive oil.
- Knead this ball until it is smooth. About 3 minutes.
- On a clean surface. Divide into 16 small balls and space them out a little bit. Put a clean kitchen towel over them and let them rest for about 30 minutes to 1 hour.
- Once they have rested, heat your skillet on medium high. Start flattening out your tortillas.
- To flatten them, I like to use a burger press to make it easier for them to stay a circle. Then I prefer a pastry roller to finish flattening them out. Someday I will buy a tortilla press!
- They should be so thing that they are almost see through. Get them as thin as you can. Lay one on the skillet and watch for it to start getting bubbles. Once it has a couple bubbles (Usually in a minute or two, depending on how hot your skillet is) flip, it should have brown marks on it when you flip it. Cook for about the same amount of time as the other side.

Notes
- You might need to play around with it. Depending on how hot your skillet it, it will cook different and may take longer before it needs to flip. You will get the hang of it in no time.
