Create A Home You Love With The 5 Senses

This post may contain affiliate links.

Let's talk about creating a cozy home you love with the 5 senses. You likely already have a few of these covered whether you have really thought about it or not. I thought this would be fun to go over.

    What are the 5 senses?

    • Sense of Sight
    • Sense of Touch
    • Sense of Hearing
    • Sense of Smell
    • Sense of Taste

They all have a purpose in your home.

    Sense of Sight

What is the sense of sight? It's what you see!

This could be all about learning to make your home look nice (in your eyes.) You don't have to do what everyone else is doing. Actually, I'm going to challenge you not to. Over years to come, you will learn your own style and what you like without being as influenced in what is trending. I don't know about you, but I can't relate to a 4,000 square foot mansion of someone that has a personal chef and housekeeper. We have found ways to DIY some projects making our house into a home that we love. My house looks like kids live here, because kids live here. I love that it does, and I know I'll be sad when it no longer looks like that.

Some of my favorite things are to just make sure my house is picked up. I don't need my house to be spotless to enjoy it, but I cannot enjoy it when it's a disaster because I just think of all the things that I need to do. Most things have a place that they belong. Tidy, not squeaky clean. My biggest tip is to clean up in small chunks throughout the day and to have a cordless vacuum or a tineco. They are so convenient!!

Fresh flowers are also a really nice touch. I like to pick my own with what I find around our property, but I love buying them once in a while as well. Even more than fresh flowers, I love to bring life into my space by having indoor plants! I feel like they make a space so inviting and I love them. Find my houseplant posts here.

Don't be in a rush to decorate your home. Only buy things that you can honestly say that you love and take your time looking. You will not run out of time to decorate. Purchases that I felt like I had to make to complete a task have not ever been something that I have loved long term. HomeGoods and TjMaxx are really great stores with affordable options if you have either of them near you.

The little touches can go a long way. You don't need to do a ton of huge and expensive projects. Sometimes just adding nice little touches can totally transform a room. An example that I am thinking of, is upgrading hardware or painting. There are so many small DIY projects that you can do without needing to spend a ton of money.

    Sense of Touch

What is the sense of touch? It's what you physically feel, like pain, pleasure, temperature, textures, etc.

Here is where you can add cozy textures. I love textures, they are one of my favorite ways to decorate and make a home look and feel inviting. Some ways to do this are area rugs, different throw pillows and some cozy blankets. You can also switch up your decor to use some wood which is a nice change of texture compared to all metal, glass, acrylic, etc.

I absolutely love having light vinyl plank floors. They are pretty, they clean easily, and I haven't found any abuse that they won't take yet. I do, however, feel like it can make a house seem "cold" and uninviting if there are all hard floors with no rugs or textures everywhere. It feels like a hospital vibe.

The furniture itself could be different textures, but more realistically are getting a few different blankets with different textures and colors to throw over your couches and on your beds. Throw pillows can add a lot of different texture as well. HomeGoods or TJMaxx have really great affordable options. Walmart has some really great options these days, too. They have really stepped up their game when it comes to home stuff!

Temperatures: Keep your house a temperature that makes you feel comfortable.

    Sense of Hearing

What is the sense of hearing? It's what you hear, like music.

Play your favorite songs, favorite noises, listen for the sounds you love. I like to have music playing while I'm in the kitchen or playing with my kids. It doesn't have to be loud or super specific, but it does do something different to the environment. I like using alexa to play different stations. Some people prefer to have the tv on for background noise, and that's okay too!

For sleeping, I love the sound of sound machines, air purifiers, and fans.

Some of my favorite noises come from the outdoors. I like to have windows open because I love the sound of birds, geese, and peepers. What are peepers called where you're from? Writing this out makes it feel so redneck, LOL. This is probably the most simple of the senses when talking about creating a home that you love with the 5 senses.

    Sense of Smell

What is the sense of smell? It's what you smell, like flowers.

I personally love to diffuse essential oils but i used to also love candles. I was obsessed with candles. Especially anything that was fall scented. Now I diffuse essential oils. I prefer Revive Essential Oils because they are much more affordable than some of the well-known oils and there is no minimum for free shipping. They have the best fall scents. My favorites are currently: Immunity, Pumpkin Pie, Cinnamon Bark, Winter Baking, and Olaf. I will link everything mentioned at the bottom of this post.

Open your windows when you can. You would be surprised at the benefits of doing this just five minutes a day. Your house will smell better and more fresh, too.

    Sense of Taste

What is the sense of taste? It's what you taste, like food.

Make something yummy! I try to always have something homemade that is available throughout the days/weeks. Life isn't perfect, so it doesn't always work out but we love homemade food. Some of our favorites are sourdough bread, muffins, waffles, and pancakes. I make a lot with sourdough. If you wanted, the sense of taste could pair with the sense of smell, if that's what you like. I love the smell of real food baking. Especially sweet smelling things like apple crisp, pumpkin pie, and any kind of cookies.

    Thanks for reading!

I hope that you have found some of the ideas about helpful when trying to create a home you love with the 5 senses. It was a fun article to write because I have been thinking about it a lot lately. I notice that I do certain things on a daily basis that have become habit and thought it would be something fun to share.

It's a good reminder to celebrate a house that looks lived in because I agree, we will be sad when it's empty!
I'm planning to grow more flowers in the garden this spring and want to make an effort to bring more inside too.
Currently, instrumental jazz is my go to for sound! I love the cozy coffee shop vibe.
Its a good reminder that a few simple tweaks can make our house a more inviting home.

I found this post appealing because I try to incorporate a holistic feel in everything I do but I was surprised to read about decorating my home by taste. Probably because I have always linked that one to smell, but I love baking so I guess the “taste” was always in the air anyway! And I’m a sucker for blankets though! So I love that you mentioned this one.

I think we could take "taste" both directions. Someones preferences or something actually tasty! Love it. I'm a sucker for blankets, too!

This is SO good! I've never thought about it in relation to the 5 senses, but it makes so much sense!
