This sourdough chocolate chip bake is thick, fluffy, and delicious. Your family will probably gobble the whole pan up in two days. This is a very simple dessert to make that turns out great every time. It's super easy and delicious. It's different than something traditional like a chocolate chip cookie. These almost reminds me of chocolate chip scones but they're not as dry.
They're pretty healthy for a dessert. They are definitely a better option than almost any prepackaged desserts from the store. The main sweetener (other than the chocolate chips) is coconut sugar, which you can replace with brown sugar if you don't have it. I can't tell a difference between coconut sugar and brown sugar flavor wise. I use coconut sugar for most of my recipes just because it's healthier.
From start to finish this dish takes about 40 minutes to make, most of which is baking. It's easy enough to prepare while you are making dinner to pop in the oven while you are eating. This makes a great treat to satisfy your sweet tooth.
I have always made homemade meals that are delicious, but I have really been working on learning to make homemade snacks and desserts for my family. This sourdough chocolate chip bake is one of our favorites.
Equipment:
- Baking Pan 8x8 or 9x7

- Baking Pan 8x8 or 9x7

- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- ⅓ Cup coconut sugar
- ½ Cup salted butter
- 1 egg
- 2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup sourdough starter- I have used active and discard.
- 1 tablespoon avocado oil
- ¾ Cup chocolate chips, semi-sweet or dark
Instructions
- First, gather your ingredients and preheat the oven to 350℉
- Add melted butter to your mixing bowl. You can melt it right in the same bowl if its microwave safe.
- To the butter, add in sugar, then Whisk in egg and vanilla extract.
- Mix in your starter. You can use active or discard.
- Once wet ingredients are mixed well, on top add flour, salt and baking soda.
- Stir around gently before folding the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients.
- The dough will be pretty thick, see photo below.
- Add 1 tablespoon avocado oil and fold in your chocolate chips.
- Line your baking pan with parchment paper and press down your dough evenly.
- Bake uncovered for 25-30 minutes. When a toothpick comes out mostly clean it's done. Cool before cutting.
Notes
- It will seem like the dough is thick and dry. That's okay, it is supposed to be. Press it down into your pan. It will turn out good, I promise!
- I have made this recipe with active bubble sourdough and also with flat discard. It turns out great either way.
